Lent Madness

Dear Friends,

After a moving Ash Wednesday service, we have entered into the season of Lent. Do you keep Lent? How? I usually try to “give up” something. This year it’s that second spoon of sugar for my tea. That may not seem like much to some, but after years of two heaping spoons of sugar, moving to a solitary level spoonful is pretty drastic for me. I also “take on” during Lent. This year I’ve picked a book from Forward Movement to study and, of course, I will be closely watching and filling in my bracket for the saintly competition that is called Lent Madness.

We have a large bracket hanging in the parish hall that will be kept updated and there are individual brackets there also. Pick one up and join in the competition. All you need to do is follow the Lent Madness Facebook page, twitter feed, or website to see the daily matchup between two of the Church’s saints. Vote on the saint you feel worthy based on your own criteria and anxiously await the day’s end for the results. It’s a fun way to earn about our history and compete with others in the Anglican fellowship around the world and at Calvary.

Voting starts today! Protomartyrs Alban and Stephen are matched for the initial round of competition. Confused by the term protomartyr? Go to the Lent Madness website for an explanation. (There’ll be a quiz next week!)

Have a good Lent!
Liz Alexander
