Day of Pentecost

Dear Friends,

Red balloons! A sea of red clothing in the congregation! Must be the Day of Pentecost!

“[The Twelve] were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability . . . Amazed and astonished, [the people who heard] asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”

(Acts 2:4, 7-11)

As a result, about 3000 people became believers and were baptized! (Acts 2:41) It is suggestive that the first job the Holy Spirit gave the Apostles at this inauguration of the Church was to speak about the work of God in the world. They were told to share the story of the faith, and as they went out into the wider world and spread the good news, others, too, shared the great story. Thousands upon thousands were infected with this holy virus, which God intends to reach “the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

We have our marching orders . . .

See you Sunday. Wear something red!
