Dear Friends,
Never underestimate either the ability of a single person to make a difference, or the willingness of God to provide what is needed!
On December 26, 2010, when Calvary still hosted the Community Kitchen, young Lydia O’Nan, riding by the church with her father, Bernard, noticed people standing around our front doors, waiting in the cold and snow. Her father told her that because the Kitchen was closed for Christmas, no meals would be served that day. Those people would go hungry.
Lydia writes, “I felt very sorry for these people and asked if we could do something for them. My dad agreed, and we got numerous gift cards, meal vouchers, and meals from many different restaurants, set up a table out in front of the church with my neighbor who joined us, and handed out these items for any person who needed them.”
Lydia is passionate about the need to feed people, and she and her father have continued “Hunger Knows No Holiday” (HKNH) ever since, packing 125 sack lunches to hand out to hungry people on days when the Community Kitchen is closed for national holidays. Last year, the O’Nans expanded the effort to include Ashland organizations and churches. Lydia and Bernard continue to coordinate the meals, which are distributed outside the Salvation Army.
Calvary will support HKNH on Friday, November 25 (the day after Thanksgiving). Carrie Crowe will coordinate Calvary’s participation. Meals will be assembled that morning at 9:30 A.M. in Calvary’s kitchen, and distributed from 11:30 to 12:30. Here’s how YOU can help:
1. Sign up this coming Sunday on the sheet posted on the easel in the parish hall to donate food. Food may be brought to Calvary Monday through Wednesday next week during office hours, or brought with you if you’re joining the packing party on Friday.
2. Sign up to assemble sandwiches at 9:30 A.M. on the 25th.
3. Sign up to participate in the distribution of meals on the 25th.
Hunger Knows No Holiday expands Calvary’s commitment to feed our neighbors in need – a commitment already well established with Blessings in a Backpack. Your help will support this remarkable ministry, begun through the compassion and determination of a single young girl.
Wishing you every blessing,
Mtr. TJ
