Many churches celebrate feast days. Some churches are named for a saint – St. John, St. Peter, etc. On that saint’s feast day, the church celebrates its saint and its life as the Body of Christ.
While our church is not named for a saint, we do celebrate a feast day: Holy Cross Day (September 14 on the church calendar, which we transfer to the closest Sunday). This holy day, first celebrated in the fourth century, is a reminder of Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross so that “he might draw the whole world to himself,” as the collect for Holy Cross Day states.
The name Calvary comes from the Latin translation of the Greek for the name Golgotha, or “place of the skull,” given in all four gospels as the place where Christ died on the cross. Our feast day and our name, then, commemorate the symbol of our salvation and the place where that salvation was won.
This Sunday, we celebrate in Central Park with food, fellowship, fun, and relaxed worship! Please note: Our service is moved this year to a location used in the past: near the log house at the hospital end of the park (enter from 22nd St.). We begin at 11:00. Bring your favorite potluck dish, lawn chairs, non-alcoholic beverages, friends, neighbors, and relatives! Calvary will supply meats to grill, buns, paper/plastic eating supplies, condiments, ice, and water. Bring your crosses (jewelry, artwork, etc.) for a blessing! Miss Debbie will have activities for the kids. Best weather forecasts predict a delightful day!
No worship at Calvary on this day. You may want to start for the park a bit early; remember that Poage Landing Days is going on in town.
Wishing you every blessing,
Mtr. TJ
