My Sisters and Brothers, As we enter this last week before Christmas, I find it hard to slow down as we are bid to do during this season of Advent. There seems to be so much to do. For once I have all my Christmas shopping done before the stores close on Christmas eve, but there are still sermons to write, and at St. Timothy’s food boxes to pack and distribute, not to mention purchasing food for thirty-four households and directing the elves in purchasing gifts for forty-seven children and letting as many know that we cannot meet their requests because we do not have the funds to help. Here at Calvary things are busy too. Alyse and Debbie have been working hard with the Christmas play this past Sunday and Tammy has been working overtime finishing bulletins for our Christmas eve services and Holy Name on January first before she takes the last of her vacation and Mona will be working feverishly closing out the books for the end of the year. The Vestry is preparing for our Annual Meeting on January twenty-ninth. The Search and Nominating Committee continues to work with Canon Amy as they prepare to report on the survey so many of you completed. The good news here is that we are ahead of the two other congregations that will soon be starting the process as Saturday evening will be the final service for two other rectors in our diocese. “Slow down, it’s Advent” seems to make as much sense as the song “Don’t worry, be happy.” For the first time in many years, I will not be spending over two hours driving home after Christmas Eve services but will spend the night in Ashland before heading home in the morning. There has always been something so peaceful about those drives. I can drive for miles without encountering another vehicle, there is always Christmas music on the radio, and memories of people leaving the service and going out into the brisk night air. Speaking of the brisk night air, predictions are that brisk this year will be an understatement. We will hold both services and I hope you will dress warmly as you head to the church house to gather with your sisters and brothers to welcome in the birth of Jesus. I so look forward to seeing you this Saturday evening. Peace, Bryant+ |
