Calvary is launching a ministry to provide weekend meals for children who qualify for free or reduced meals in the Ashland schools. We are registered with Blessings in a Backpack, a program headquartered in Louisville that makes it possible for weekend meals to be provided for 58,000 children in the U.S. and Canada. This program is the 2012 Charity of the Year. Calvary is the first to introduce Blessings in a Backpack to Ashland! We hope other churches will follow.
Starting at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, Calvary members will gather in the parish hall after work on Wednesday evenings to package the meals to be delivered on Thursdays to one or more local schools. Consider signing up to help package meals one or more Wednesdays each month.
$80 will feed one child every weekend for an entire school year. Consider sponsoring one or more children. As of Thursday, August 2, we have pledges to sponsor 106 children and 29 members who will help package the food on Wednesday evenings. We are still hoping for more people to offer helping hands. We will also need people who are willing to pick up the food on a regular schedule at a local grocery store and bring it for storage at Calvary. Others will be needed to deliver containers of packaged food to Crabbe School on Thursdays or Fridays so that it can be distributed to the children before the weekend.
Pledge cards were distributed on Sunday morning, May 20, and are available on the parish hall bulletin board and in the parish office. HERE is one you can download and bring or send to the parish office - P.O. Box 109, Ashland 41105. Pledge cards will also be available on a bulletin board in the parish hall along with a display showing our progress and how many children will receive our assistance.
Fr. Ron Pogue announced this new outreach ministry in his sermon on May 13. He said, "By the beginning of the new school year, Calvary will have gone in eight months time from being known on the community grapevine as 'the church where the Community Kitchen used to be' to 'the church that brought Blessings in a Backpack to Ashland to feed hungry children.'"
Jeannie Broughton is our program coordinator and will work alongside Deacon Diane Zwick in making preparations to start the ministry at the beginning of school in August. We have been asked to adopt Crabbe Elementary School. Jeannie and Deacon Diane have met with the principal Brad Greene.
Let's make this a truly parish-wide endeavor. Members of all ages can help. Please make your commitment right away so we can let the school district know how many children we will help. Contact Jeannie Broughton or Deacon Diane Zwick for additional information.
